“Big cats” is a term commonly used in reference to large wild cats. Big cats, small wild cats and domestic cats are members of the felidae family. Big cats includes the different types of big cats worldwide, from tigers (the largest big cats), lions, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, to clouded leopards (the smallest big cats).
Many wild big cat species are currently classified on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as VULNERABLE, ENDANGERED AND CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. Some are even EXTINCT. Wild big cat populations are declining all over the planet due to habitat loss, human conflict, loss of prey, poaching and illegal wildlife trade. Big cats, including tigers and leopards, are aggressively hunted for their pelts, organs and even bones as the Chinese medicine and arts and crafts. Some populations of large wild cat species have been reduced by 80% over the past 10 years. Losing these majestic predators would create a devastating impact on our ecosystem.
Designer Steve Chan hopes to use his Big Cats backpack creations, to raise awareness to the public on the Big Cats conservation and to stop the illegal trade issues. Hope you take action in joining us to supports scientists and conservationists working to save big cats in the wild.
